What the Georgia Senate Runoff Vote 2020 means

The late Elijah Cummings D-MD, said it best when coined the 2020 election cycle as a “fight for the soul of our nation“. He was and still is absolutely correct in that statement. President-Elect, Joe Biden embraced that sentiment as his campaign slogan for the presidential election cycle of 2020. He was right to use it.

Thank you Georgia for exercising your Constitutional right to vote and flipping the State Blue for the 2020 presidential cycle. Your work is not complete though. There is another branch of government that must be dealt with, the Senate.

Both senate seats are in play this election, and the balance of power in government lies in the balance. Republicans are defending both seats, David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler being the incumbents. Democrats challenging the incumbents are Jon Ossoff and Dr. Eli Warnock.

The Incumbents Platform

Both Perdue and Loeffler are Climate Change deniers for starters. Tandemly they support government overreach on women’s reproductive rights, guns in schools and taking away your healthcare under the Affordable Care Act. The atrocities do not stop there. You can search their voting records at www.justfacts.votesmart.org.

Suppressing the vote is strategy. Perdue and Loeffler have not congratulated President-Elect Biden because they do not believe his win to be legitimate. Instead, they peddle conspiracy theories about non-existent voter fraud. Now they have publicly called for the Republican Secretary of State to step down.

This would allow current Georgia Governor, Brian Kemp, to appoint a loyalist to the position. No doubt they dust off the old playbook Kemp applied in his 2018 run for Governor. Republicans seem to have no problem with that.

The Soul of the Nation at this Moment

My hope in this runoff race for both Georgia Senate seats, is to address the bigger picture and look at control of this branch of government. Then as yourself what is important to you and your families. I would venture a guess a majority of households in America share many of those concerns.

Most Americans support increasing the minimum wage, marijuana legalization, addressing climate change just to name a few. The natural question would be why these issues are being ignored. There is an answer, Moscow Mitch McConnell R-KY. He is the Senate Majority Leader and decides what will and will not be voted on in the Senate. He prides himself as the Grim Reaper. All Bills go there to die.

Georgians must decide in the runoff election of 2020 if they will reward McConnell for being the biggest hypocrite in political history, or make him the minority leader. When I say hypocrite, I mean literally. I am old enough to remember when Merrick Garland was nominated by President Obama to serve on the Supreme Court.

“Do as I say and not as I do” has never resonated with anyone I know. So for McConnell to use the argument that, “in an election year the people should decide who the next Supreme Court Justice should be”. This must only apply when a Democrat is in the White House. The same fact pattern appeared before McConnell again. This time a Republican was in the White House, what did McConnell say, “We’re going to fill it“. This is text book hypocrisy.

So Georgia, are you going to send Mitch McConnel to the Minority, or reward his hypocrisy?
